Heads up · The 10-year clock

The IRS has a 10-year Collection Statute Expiration Date (CSED) on each tax debt. Filing an Offer in Compromise pauses that clock. If your CSED is close, filing an OIC can actually hurt you. IRIS checks this automatically.
